Udyam registration costs nothing and takes minutes — and unlocks the MSMED Act’s payment protections, priority-sector lending, credit-guarantee cover and tender preferences. This page covers the April-2025 limits, the zero-document process that still manages to fail, and — the part most guides skip — how to actually use the registration once you have it.

CategoryInvestment in plant & machinery/equipmentTurnover
MicroUp to ₹2.5 croreUp to ₹10 crore
SmallUp to ₹25 croreUp to ₹100 crore
MediumUp to ₹125 croreUp to ₹500 crore

Both tests must hold for a band; exports are excluded from turnover for classification. Full mechanics and benefit details: the Udyam 2026 guide.

Check your class: Micro, Small or Medium?

The two needles that decide it, on the revised limits effective 1 April 2025 — instant read, nothing stored.

What you need (and what actually fails)

  • The right person’s Aadhaar with a live linked mobile (OTPs decide everything)
  • Entity PAN (proprietors: personal PAN) with names reconciling across records
  • GSTIN where registered; NIC activity codes chosen with care

Failure modes are linkage breaks, not paperwork — the documents-and-traps guide lists each with its fix.

Registration to results — the usage layer

  • Payment protection: URN + 45-day terms on invoices and POs; interest computation ready for chronic late payers — buyers’ own 43B(h) exposure now does half your collections work
  • Credit: priority-sector classification and CGTMSE-backed collateral-free limits (enhanced cover up to ₹10 crore) — take the certificate TO the banker, with CMA data that reconciles
  • Tenders: 25% micro/small procurement reservation, fee and EMD exemptions — quoted, not assumed
  • Schemes: class-wise eligibility mapped rather than discovered
Worth knowing right now (reviewed 7 August 2026)
· Buyers are classifying vendors for 43B(h) — being registered and visible gets you paid first
· Crossed a band? Update the URN; continuity provisions protect benefits through transition
· E-invoicing arrives at ₹5 crore turnover regardless of MSME status — check applicability

Frequently asked questions

What are the MSME limits after the 2025 revision?

From 1 April 2025: Micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment / ₹10 crore turnover; Small ₹25 crore investment / ₹100 crore turnover; Medium ₹125 crore investment / ₹500 crore turnover. Both needles must sit inside a band to claim it.

Is Udyam registration really free?

Completely — the government portal charges nothing and uploads nothing. Paid websites are intermediaries at best.

What documents are needed?

Practically none to upload: the right person’s Aadhaar (with live linked mobile), entity PAN, GSTIN where held. It fails on broken PAN-Aadhaar-GST linkages, not missing PDFs — our documents guide covers the traps.

Whose Aadhaar is used for a company or LLP?

The authorised signatory’s, with the organisation’s PAN — not any random director’s.

Are traders eligible?

Yes, for defined benefit windows — notably priority-sector lending classification. The certificate states your category; the benefits map tells you what it actually unlocks.

What is the 45-day payment protection?

Registered micro/small suppliers must be paid within agreed terms capped at 45 days (15 without written terms), with statutory compound interest on delay — and buyers now feel it through Section 43B(h) tax deferral. Wire the URN into invoices to make it bite.

Do exports count in turnover for classification?

Export turnover is excluded when computing the turnover limit for classification — a deliberate incentive many exporters miss.

We crossed into Small from Micro. Do benefits vanish overnight?

No — on upward reclassification you continue in the previous category’s benefits for the transition period provided by notification (the 2022 framework grants continuity). Update the registration; do not hide growth.

Does Udyam expire or need renewal?

No renewal — but keep it updated as figures move; ITR/GST data syncs against it and stale declarations invite mismatch.

Can I have two Udyam registrations for two businesses?

One Udyam per PAN — multiple activities/units sit inside the same registration with additional details.

What is CGTMSE and how does Udyam connect?

Collateral-free credit guarantee cover for MSMEs — limits now up to ₹10 crore under the enhanced framework. Lenders route it against your Udyam category.

Government tenders — what does MSME status actually give?

25% procurement reservation for micro/small in central purchases, tender-fee and EMD exemptions in eligible tenders — real, usable advantages with the certificate quoted.

Udyam vs MSME vs Udyog Aadhaar — same thing?

Udyam is the current registration regime (successor to Udyog Aadhaar); “MSME registration” colloquially means Udyam today. Old UAM numbers should have migrated.

Will wrong declarations catch up with me?

Yes — the portal cross-verifies against ITR and GST data; classification claimed against the records unwinds with the benefits taken on it.

Registration done — what should I actually DO with it?

Three things: put the URN on invoices/POs with 45-day terms, hand the certificate to your banker for priority-sector consideration, and map scheme eligibility for your class — registration without usage is a PDF in a folder.

Register right — then make it pay

We complete Udyam with clean linkages, wire the protections into your invoicing, and map the credit and scheme doors your class actually opens.

Fees — what Udyam registration actually costs

What does the government charge?

Nothing. Udyam registration is free on the official portal — no fee, no document uploads, no renewal. Paid “agents” and lookalike portals are charging you for a free government service.

Then what is the professional fee for?

Getting the inputs right: NIC-code selection that matches what you actually do, investment and turnover figures consistent with your ITR and GST data, and updates when you cross bands — because misclassification surfaces at the worst time, in a loan file or tender.

How do we quote?

A small fixed fee in writing for registration or update, and it is bundled at no separate charge inside our MSME accounting and compliance retainers. Ask us.
