When and how to choose
- Salaried, no business income: tell your employer your preferred regime for TDS at the start of the year. You can still make the final choice when you file the return, and you can choose again every year.
- Business or professional income: the new regime applies unless you opt out by the return due date under s.202(4). Once you opt out, you can withdraw that option only once, so treat it as a long-term decision.
- Returns for FY 2025-26 filed during 2026 still follow the Income-tax Act, 1961 and its section numbers (80C, 80D, 115BAC). This calculator is for income earned from 1 April 2026.
Before you decide
- Compare on the deductions you will genuinely have, not on targets. Locking money in a five-year product only to make the old regime win rarely pays.
- Your EPF contribution already counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh basket, so many salaried people have less headroom than they think.
- Asking your employer to route part of the salary into employer NPS lowers tax under both regimes, within the 14% limit.
- Investment proofs usually go to the employer between January and March. A last-minute proof that is missed raises TDS, though you can still claim the deduction in the return.
- Rent above ₹1 lakh a year needs the landlord's PAN for the HRA claim.

Questions
Which regime applies if I do nothing?
The new regime. You must exercise the option under section 202(4) to be taxed under the old regime.
Is salary up to ₹12.75 lakh really tax-free?
For a resident individual with only normal-rate income, yes. Salary of ₹12.75 lakh less the ₹75,000 standard deduction gives total income of ₹12 lakh, and the s.156 rebate removes the tax. Above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from exceeding the income above ₹12 lakh.
Does the calculator handle capital gains?
No. Gains on listed shares and equity funds and similar income are taxed at special rates, and the rebate does not apply to them. Enter only normal-rate income here and treat capital gains separately.
I am a non-resident. Does this work for me?
Yes, for normal-rate income. Select Non-resident: the s.156 rebate is removed, and the old regime uses the below-60 slabs whatever your age.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored, unless you choose to contact the firm.
